The Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology was established in 1965 by Prof. Dr. Maj. Gen. Bancha Mintrakhin, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Administration at that time. The Royal Decree of Social Administration Faculty Establishment (Second Version, signed on 2 April 1965), authorized the incorporation of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology into the Faculty of Social Administration and named the degree, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Sociology and Anthropology.

During the preparatory period, Prof. Dr. Maj. Gen. Bancha Mintrakhin liaised with a range of scholars from many institutes. Such scholars included Professor Kasem Utthayanin, Professor Prasert Yamklinfung and Professor Pattaya Saihoo, while other academics, such as Assoc. Prof. Jamriang Pavichit and Assoc. Prof. Chalermsri Dhammabutra, were approached to assist in establishing the Department. However, as it turned out, both Associated Professors’ home faculties only allowed them to assist sporadically. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Maj. Gen. Bancha Mintrakhin himself was relocated to Saigon as an ambassador. Hence, the mission of setting up the team and drafting the curriculum for the department was left in the capable hands of Prof. Khun Ying Subab Wisetsurakan, the Director of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology (April 1965 – December 1971), who successfully achieved this goal.
On 17 January1977, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology was reorganized as a Special Independent Department, which was the equivalent of a faculty. Then on 17 February 1984, it was launched as Thailand’s inaugural Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology. Currently, it consists of 14 Heads of Departments, Heads of Independent Studies and the Dean.
In terms of academic expansion, the Faculty has introduced the master’s degree program in the Department of Sociology under the degree of Master of Arts (Sociology) and later, the master’s degree in anthropology under the degree of Master of Arts (Anthropology) with the aim of facilitating change in society through fieldwork research.
In 1995, the Faculty introduced the Graduate Diploma in Social Research and, in 2008, it launched another special program entitled the Bachelor of Arts (Social Research). In 2009, a Doctor of Philosophy (Anthropology) degree course was established and then in 2011, a new graduate degree was introduced, Master of Arts (Social Research).
