We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Miangul Adnan Aurangzab for his demise. He was a guest of honour of Thammasat University and the Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology along with Mr.Imran Shauket and Mir Khokhar. They became great friends of the Faculty. We were invited to Pakistan with a plan of founding academic and cultural collaboration between Thai and Pakistani academia. We received the warmest hospitality from those respectable gentlemen.

Miangul Aurangzab, we called him Prince Adnan, was very proud of Swat history and culture. We were invited to his house in Swat where we were hosted with morning tea and dinner almost each day of our time in Swat. We learned about his background as the eldest grandson of Miangul Jahan Zeb, the last ruler of Swat state. Despite his princely background he was approachable and, in fact, down to earth. He had demonstrated that there was no religious boundary in heritage conservation in Swat. Buddhist monuments were looked after well by Swat villagers who were very proud of their glorious heritage and history.

Our memory of Prince Adnan in Swat and Bangkok is still vivid. You will remain in our mind. May your soul rest in peace.

Before the car accident that we lost him forever, he delivered his lecture to students at Hasara University. As he was ending his talk he said,

“if my story is incomplete then these students from Swat will complete my story…”

คณะสังคมวิทยาและมานุษยวิทยา มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ ขอแสดงความเสียใจอย่างยิ่งต่ออสัญกรรมของเมียงกูล อัดนัน โอรังเซป (Miangul Adnan Aurangzab) ผู้ซึ่งมีส่วนสำคัญในการสานความสัมพันธ์ด้านการศึกษาและวัฒนธรรมระหว่างปากีสถานกับมหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์และคณะสังคมวิทยาและมานุษยวิทยา

กล่าวได้ว่า เมียงกูล อัดนัน โอรังเซป มีศักดิ์เป็น “เจ้าชาย” เพราะสืบทอดสายตระกูลมาจากบรรพบุรุษที่มีตำแหน่งเป็น Wali of Swat หรือผู้ปกครองรัฐสวัติก่อนที่จะเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของอังกฤษและปากีสถาน ทั้งยังดำรงตำแหน่งอดีตสมาชิกรัฐสภาของปากีสถาน

ในระหว่างการเดินทางเยือนพื้นที่หุบเขาสวัติ (Swat Valley) ของคณะอาจารย์จากคณะสังคมวิทยาและมานุษยวิทยา นอกจากท่านจะให้การต้อนรับอย่างดียิ่งที่บ้านของท่านแล้ว ยังได้แสดงให้เห็นถึงความสนใจในการส่งเสริมรักษามรดกวัฒนธรรมในพื้นที่ที่ดูแลสืบต่อกันมาจากยุคบรรพบุรุษของท่านเพื่อส่งต่อไปยังเยาวชน ท่านได้อุทิศตนในช่วงระยะเวลาสุดท้ายของชีวิตในการต้อนรับพุทธศาสนิกชนจากทั่วโลกที่มาเยือนหุบเขาสวัติ

เมียงกุล อัดนัน โอรังเซป ได้ถึงแก่อสัญกรรมเมื่อวานนี้โดยอุบัติเหตุรถยนต์ หลังจากเดินทางกลับจากการบรรยายให้กับนักศึกษาที่มหาวิทยาลัยฮาซารา ท่านได้กล่าวข้อความไว้ตอนหนึ่งว่า

“If my story is incomplete then these students from Swat will complete my story…”
